About Us

Building Markets is a nonprofit organization that connects entrepreneurs and organizations, creates jobs, and sustains peace in developing countries. The organization was founded in 2004 and currently has headquarters in New York City and Ottawa. The organization is registered as an American 501c3 charity and a Canadian non-profit, and is registered locally with the Ministry of Economy in Afghanistan.

Since its inception in 2006, our Sustainable Marketplace Initiative in Afghanistan has supported market development and job creation. This initiative has achieved the following results:*

  • Our team has trained employees from 1,556 businesses in instruction-lead capacity-building workshops and collected 861 responses to follow-up surveys from participants at these workshops. Participating businesses attributed feedback related to 333 contracts worth $144 million to their participation in training sessions.
  • We have obtained and sent 6,891 tenders to Afghan small and medium enterprises.
  • We have registered over 8,000 businesses on an online directory.
  • We have recorded 1,364 contracts worth over $1 billion won by at least 680 businesses where help from Building Markets’ services was a factor in securing these contracts.
  • It is estimated that these contracts have contributed to creating or sustaining approximately 130,000 six-month jobs or 65,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
